All continents were represented via online live stream when the Cathedral in Vienna was turned into a little Medjugorje for a day. Before his 8 minutes long apparition, visionary Ivan Dragicevic said that the Virgin Mary has come to bring hope to a world without hope because God has been abandoned.

The Virgin Mary has come as a teacher and there are no weekends in her school of conversion, Medjugorje visionary Ivan Dragicevic reiterated before his live streamed apparition of the Virgin Mary in the Cathedral of Vienna, Austria, on November 17.

During his eight minutes long apparition Ivan indeed resembled the pupil in love with his teacher – with frequent gazes of delight on top of a thoroughly polite demeanor with much smiling and nodding, obviosuly engaged in a familiar and friendly conversation. Before that he had told the packed Cathedral and all the viewers worldwide present via MaryTV’s live stream why the Virgin Mary is appearing at this time:

“Our Lady wants to take the tears from our faces. She wants to bring us hope because the world is without hope because we have abandoned God. Therefore our Mother comes to bring us the divine medicine. She wants to heal us from our illnesses with her motherly love and warmth. She is coming to us. She wants to lead us to her Son. Only in her Son is peace” Ivan said.

“There is so much talk about economic recession but obviously it is not just an economic recession but also a spiritual recession. Our Lady comes to us to show us a new way. She wants to get sinful people out of this recession. She is our Mother and she is so concerned of our salvation”.

Emphasizing the Rosary, Ivan described prayer as the cure to the many illnesses faced by individuals, families and whole societies:

“She wants to lead us out of darkness into light, into hope. She says society is sick in a spiritual sense. Families and societies are sick. But with the return of prayer in families, spiritual healing can take place. Our Lady says we need healing in societies and families and then there will be so much more love” Ivan said.

“Prayer is needed to know God. Prayer must become a friendship with Jesus – that we may be full of joy and peace for every word we pray”.

Ivan also reitereated the Virgin Mary’s calls to fasting and reading the Bible:

“Put the Bible in a visible place in your homes. Read the Bible. Through reading the Bible, Jesus will be born in your hearts and in your families” the visionary said.

After the evening’s Mass presided over by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Ivan said that the Virgin Mary had been “very happy and joyful”. Ivan also told that, in a special way, he had entrusted the diocese of Vienna to the Virgin Mary who had then “prayed in a very special way for this diocese and for the needs of this diocese”. Ivan then passed on this message from the Virgin Mary:

“Dear children, today I call you to prayer. In a special way because Satan wants war, I call you again, my little children, pray, pray that God will give you peace. Be witnesses to everyone in this world, and be carriers of God’s peace. I am with you and I pray in front of God for each person who is here. And you, do not be afraid because the one who prays is not afraid of evil and has no hatred in the heart. Thank you, dear children, for coming back and having followed my call.”

“In truth this evening when we have been together in prayer has been full of the Holy Spirit. May we continue in our families what we have started tonight. I hope the seed we have sown will bear good fruit. Thank you!” Ivan ended his description.

Cardinal Schonborn and Medjugorje - It's a big deal

Are there really any words to describe what Cardinal Schonborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, is undertaking right now in Europe?

Can we compare Cardinal Schonborn’s actions today to anything else in the modern era of the Catholic Church?

To fully understand Cardinal Schonborn’s incomparable pursuit, first it must be understood that Cardinal Schonborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, is a giant figure in the Catholic Church. Cardinal Schonborn is a former student and close friend of Pope Benedict XVI. He serves as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Earlier this year he was appointed as the first member of the newly created Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization. The young Cardinal is widely recognized as “Palabile” (could one day be Pope) and as Editorial Director of the Catholic Catechism – the official rule book of the Catholic Church – he is greatly respected throughout the world.

Cardinal Schoborn’s gravitas and impeccable catholic credentials speak for themselves, and so within this context, we find it extraordinary that he is proclaiming, from the roof tops, or more accurately, from inside the great St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, that the Blessed Mother is now appearing on earth in an unprecedented fashion to six "Visionaries" and he is urging the Catholic faithful to pay close attention. The Austrian Archbishop, by his actions today, unequivocally lends support to claims that the Blessed Virgin Mary is revealing Herself to the world and that her presence on earth is for the clear purpose of demonstrating that God truly exists. Cardinal Schonborrn also insists that the Blessed Mother is bringing important messages of peace for a world that has little peace. Her messages of peace are accompanied by an urgent and incessant plea for all of humanity to reconcile with God.

In an extraordinary event in Vienna, Austria, Cardinal Schonborn celebrated Mass with a man who claims to see and speak to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His name is Ivan Dragicevic. Ivan is one of six visionaries who say they see the Virgin Mary and these six people are at that center of a mysterious phenomenon known the world over as “Medjugorje” Ivan, is Croation and comes from the town of Medjugorje located in Bosnia and Herzegovinain and he has experienced daily apparitions with the Blessed Mother since June of 1981.

Ivan was in Austria at the invitation of Cardinal Schonborn not only to attend Mass but to have his apparition inside St. Stephen's Cathedral with the Cardinal there to witness the experience as well. Ivan's apparition lasted about eight minutes and afterwords Cardinal Schonborn celebrated Mass mentioning Medjugorje in his homily and expressed regret that he could not attend this year's Youth Festival at Medjugorje.

The entire apparition and Mass were shown locally on TV and broadcast throughout the world over the internet. To see the Editorial Director of the Catholic Catechism and close friend of the Pope on live television sitting patiently and reverentially in the grand setting of St. Stephen's Cathedral as the visionary falls into ecstasy and visits with the Blessed Mother who arrives quite literally from the afterlife is something to behold. But many are asking why would Cardinal Schonborn provide such a high profile platform to a supernatural phenomenon when the Catholic Church has yet to give its official approval? Why the invitation? Afterall, the Vatican just recently commissioned a special task force to determine the authenticity of Medjugorje.

By his actions today, essentially front-running the Vatican Commission on Medjugorje, does Cardinal Schonborn, a key member of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation, sense a special urgency? What are his motivations? Does he sense time is running out for the troubled Church in Europe?

Few would argue that the Catholic Church is not under siege and in crisis the world over. The Catholic Church in Europe has been devastated by the sex abuse horror. Austria particularly has been hard hit and has seen a troubling exodus of worshipers. Furthermore there is now a growing disobedience movement in Austria led by rebellious priests who are calling for, among a number of contentious issues, that the Eucharist be offered at the Mass by lay people when a priest is not available. The responsibility for all of these problems in Austria, of course, falls on the shoulders of Cardinal Schonborn, and in the midst of this crisis, rather than schedule more meetings, appoint new commissions, or hire consultants, the Archbishop has instead reached out to Ivan Dragicvic of Medjugorje to come to his Cathedral and pray.

This is not a little deal. This is not an aside. This is not a promise kept. This is not a PR stunt. The invitation to a visionary to experience an apparition of the Blessed Mother in a great European Cathedral in the middle of colossal upheaval within the Catholic Church is a big deal. Unprecedented really. By Cardinal Schonborn's bold and decisive action it appears, he is telling the world, under no uncertain terms, that the Church is in trouble and the best way out of the crisis is not through more meetings and task forces but to pray and to turn to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to seek her intercession in a time of great need. It is important not to forget the words of Our Lady at Fatima: “In the end my heart will triumph”. It would seem Cardinal Schonborn has taken these words seriously and to his heart.

It seems clear that Cardinal Schonborn, unlike the bishops in America who continue to look for solutions for what ails the Church in the political arena - urgent meeting with President Obama, issuing position papers and press releases to the New York Times - is taking a different path to repair the damage. Cardinal Schonborn has moved beyond seeking solutions to problems confronting the Catholic Church through worldly means. Schonborn is not looking to lawyers and courts to protect the faith but rather the great Cardinal understands the solution will come only from the heavens. The Catholic Church will only be restored with our prayers, our humility to God and by the intervention of the supernatural revealed to us by the presence of Our Lady here on earth who is among us today to show us the way back to Her son.

Joseph Grbes gave everyone a little update at a Medjugorje Peace conference in Irvine, CA in the U.S. Throughout these 30 years of apparitions in Medjugorje there were: 540,000 registered priests, Bishops, Cardinals, and religious visited Medjugorje (These are "registered" so father stated when he spoke, God only knows how many came that week registered.)

27,000,000 communions 532 proven and documented healings that are recorded at the parish. 520 men became priests directly related to a pilgrimage to Medjugorje.(We know that 85 American, 36 German, 11 Irish so far.) 123 women became nuns directly related to a pilgrimage to Medjugorje.
During the Youth Festival there were 525 priests there and 450 for the evening prayer service and Mass.

Part 1

The cardinal from Vienna Christoph Schönborn advocates an integration of the "phenomenon Medjugorje" into the regular pastoral care. This was told on Sunday by the president of the Austrian bishop's conference in an interview with the "news service of the archdiocese Vienna". Schönborn had spent the turn of the year at the Marian site in a visit that was declared as being private and a meeting with the community "Cenacolo". Cardinal Schönborn wanted to see the place where allegedly Mary has been appearing since 1981 and from which, according to his impression, "many positive fruits" have come forth.

He deems it necessary to "dedramatize" the phenomenon Medjugorje, said the Viennese archbishop. Without a doubt the initial impulse came forth from the "seers" who in 1981 were still children when it came to the first alleged "apparitions". Since then these extraordinary events are only playing a secondary role. He thought it to be something like "a school of ordinary Christian life" and is fascinated by this:
"There it is about the belief in Christ, prayer, the Eucharist, practiced charity, about the essentials of Christianity, and the strengthening in Christian daily life".
Incidentally, Cardinal Schönborn is in favor of studying the "phenomenon Medjugorje" in light of the Second Vatican Council: The "sensus fidelium", the sense of faith of the Baptized plays a very important role in the occurrences in Medjugorje.

He does not want to anticipate the decision of the universal church, but in the matter of Medjugorje would prefer to orient himself on the "guidelines" formulated by the Yugoslavian bishop's conference in 1991, says Cardinal Schönborn. These "guidelines" - twice confirmed by the Vatican Congration for the Doctrine of the Faith - "are wise and trend-setting". In the "guidelines" it is emphasized that it is not determined whether the incidents in Medjugorje are "supernatural". The question of supernaturalness is expressly left open. As a consequence, there are no official pilgrimages allowed. But at the same time, the necessity of the pastoral care of the pilgrims is also emphazied in the "guidelines". On the one had the bishops were concerned to not hinder the fruits, on the other hand they wanted to ward off people being led astray. Incidentally, the Viennese archbishop was very congenially moved that the female seers"have turned out to be normal and humorous young people".

What is it that moves the pilgrims coming to Medjugorje? Cardinal Schönborn: "Above all, the pilgrims are doing one thing: They are praying. Every day the entire psalter is prayed by thousands of people, there is Eucharistic adoration; the people are climbing the Cross Mountain where a cross was erected in 1933, and are praying the stations of the cross or are climbing the mountain Crnica in the district of Bijakovici and are praying the rosary." The "fruits" of Medjugorje can be encountered consistently in the life of the Church, emphasized the archbishop. The prayer groups are a significant aspect: "The first prayer group in Vienna was formed in the middle of the 80's in the Dominican Church. The church was always full, even in the summer months. Especially impressive was the large number of young people." Among the younger priests there are many whose journey of vocation has been influenced by the experience of Medjugorje. But in Medjugorje not only vocations are happening but also conversions. During his stay Cardinal Schönborn met an Italian TV moderator who experienced a deep conversion at this place of pilgrimage. Medjugorje is also a "rediscovery of confession". Furthermore, the aspect of the global Church is very impressive - during his short stay the cardinal noticed groups of pilgrims from Italy, Germany, the United States, Lebanon, Korea and so forth. The annual youth festival in July draws 60.000 young people from all over the world.

In particular, the Viennese archbishop stressed the large number of social works that developed in Medjugorje: The community "Cenacolo", founded by Sr. Elvira Petrozzi for teenagers addicted to drugs, gained in Medjugorje the impulse for global expansion, the "Mother's Village" ("Majcino selo") offers orphans and raped women shelter since the Balkan Wars, and from an encounter of a female pilgrim from the African Malawi with a Scottish group of pilgrims under the direction of Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, the initiative "Mary's Meals" was formed, that ensures daily meals for hungry children worldwide.

Hence, the question how the tree looks that carries such fruits, needs to be asked, says Cardinal Schönborn. Many aspects that are consistend with the "grammar of Marian apparitions" apply to Medjugorje: A poor region whose inhabitans are nonetheless very religious, the visions were bestowed to children just like in Lourdes or Fatima, and the messages are very simple but pertain to the crux of the gospel. Notably is also that in Medjugorje Mary has been revered foremost as "Queen of Peace" from the beginning - ten years before the breakout of the Balkan Wars. Dear Children of Medjugorje, praised be Jesus and Mary!

1 - On November 2, Mirjana Soldo received her monthly apparition at the Cenacle. After the apparition she gave us the following message, “Dear children, today I call you to a complete union with God. Your body is on earth, but I ask you for your soul to be all the more often in God’s nearness. You will achieve this through prayer, prayer with an open heart. In that way you will thank God for the immeasurable goodness which He gives to you through me and, with a sincere heart, you will receive the obligation to treat the souls whom you meet with equal goodness. Thank you, my children“.

Our Lady added: “With the heart I pray to God to give strength and love to your shepherds to help you in this and to lead you.“

2 - The president. I wish the US citizens had not failed to choose life. We need to pray hard for our leaders and our nations! It’s not by chance that Our Lady said a few days ago, “Dear children, in a special way I call you all to pray for my intentions so that, through your prayers, you may stop Satan's plan over this world, which is further from God every day….” (See PS 1).

From the Bible and throughout the history of humanity, we know that the blessing of God falls on a country that follows His Word and desires to put Him in the first place. We also know that people who ignore His Word, commandments and statutes cannot be blessed. We pray that the US will no longer attempt to take the place of God in deciding who should live and who should die, or call abominations good things, or consider children as “punishment”. May the US no longer support Satan’s plan by promoting perverted laws, and instead remember their beautiful roots in God and look to please Him over entertaining man. In one word, survive! It is indeed a matter of life and death. “I call on heaven and earth today to witness against you: I have set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life then, so that you and your descendants may live....” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

I wish I could be more cheerful for my American readers, but I don’t want to be a hypocrite. The situation is such that if we, as Catholics, do not live the instructions from the Queen of Peace (the Gospel from the mouth of a Mother) in addition to the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel, then our house won’t stand long, the winds and floods and storms will ruin it. In the New Testament, didn’t Jesus tell us what will happen to those who heard the message but didn’t practice it?

May we call to mind Our Lady’s message of January 25, 1997 which pertains today in a very special way: “Dear children! I invite you to reflect about your future. You are creating a new world without God, only with your own strength and that is why you are unsatisfied and without joy in the heart. This time is my time and that is why, little children, I invite you again to pray. When you find unity with God, you will feel hunger for the word of God and your heart, little children, will overflow with joy. You will witness God's love wherever you are. I bless you and I repeat to you that I am with you to help you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

The potential of the Saints for the US is huge, enormous! Dear reader, decide today to be that saint! Then you’ll be more powerful to save your country than a bomb is to destroy it! Please, seek the blessing of God on your dear homeland by living all His commandments with love!

3 – The Saints. I love November. It is a wonderful month because we start with the Saints! They are such an inspiration for us, a cause of so much joy! We also receive special graces while praying for our deceased, and in a special way we spend the month with our eyes focused on Heaven and our Heavenly destination!

Mirjana has said to a group of pilgrims that when Our Lady says, “Your body is on earth, but I ask you for your soul to be all the more often in God's nearness”, she intends that during each moment of our life on earth, we should strive to remember God and get closer to Him. Only in this way, when the hour comes to leave this earth, we have great peace, there is no shaking, no fear, because the passage is just a continuation of the move we have already started on earth!

Pope John Paul II has passionately urged the faithful to return to the Saints, especially to the great mystics of the Church. I, for one, have seen so many lives changed, so many inner healings granted, in people who simply read “The story of a Soul” by Little Flower, for example; or “The Ascent of Mt. Carmel” by St. John of the Cross! In fact, I have a friend who, when she was 25, couldn't help but weep with joy in her bedroom reading “The Dialogues” of St. Catherine of Sienna. As a result of that book, she renounced sin, radically changed her life and became a very happy person.

Saints are solid! They are, without a doubt, our best teachers on our way to holiness! Today, Our Lady is also asking families to “read the lives of the Saints”. This will, in a beautiful way, heal the great emptiness kids may feel when it comes to practicing their faith. If they don't find an exciting example around, they'll want to leave the Church, especially in a world where they have pop “stars” of all kinds, but very few models to increase their interest on spiritual matters! (See PS4)

4 - The culture of death is not automatic! My friends from Northern France, pilgrims to Medjugorje for years, told us what happened to their daughter Audrey. Audrey was seven months pregnant with her 3rd child when she went to her gynecologist. Everything seemed to be normal during the ultrasound, but as she was returning home, she got a call on her cell phone, “Doctor Doe wants to see you right away!”

Audrey went back to the clinic trembling. “After looking again at your ultrasound, I think there may be a problem: the fetus has unusually small limbs. It would be good to do another ultrasound to eliminate the hypothesis of Dwarfism." The bomb was thrown without any tact. Another appointment was made for 10 days later with another physician. What anxiety for mother and baby!

The 2nd ultrasound revealed the same diagnosis. After the two doctors consulted with one another, they decided to do an amniocentesis (in spite of the risks involved) because they were now afraid of trisomy. Audrey, who had been very brave so far, began to lose her morale. Prayer “networks” sprung into action surrounding her with intercessory prayer. (How good it is to be supported by brothers and sisters!) The invasive amniocentesis procedure was done in a sterile environment, without the father present. Audrey recalls that it was a stressful and inhuman atmosphere!

The result of the amniocentesis showed that all of the chromosomes were normal. Audrey gave birth to a beautiful 7.5 lb little boy on July 2nd at 10:30 in the evening, (during Adoration in Medjugorje where her parents were begging Jesus to help!) The gynecologist reacted with shock, “Madam, it is abnormal that this child is normal!” (For a picture of Audrey and beautiful baby Leon click here!)

Is this a strange mistake or something else? We will never know! I only know that this kind of mistake happens too often. Several of my friends in fact had very healthy babies though they were asked to have an abortion because of an anomaly.

Audrey's parents went to Lourdes to thank Jesus and Mary. While they refuse to hold a grudge against the doctors and the clinic, they detest the culture of death, which has made society so afraid to have an abnormal or less than perfect child! May the Lord bless medical doctors so they safeguard and respect life! May God give serenity to mothers expecting a baby! May He give strength and courage to parents expecting a handicapped child, may these parents be supported by the medical world and the government! (See PS 5)

5 - 30 years ago! I do not usually talk about my private life here, but I am going to break new ground! It happens that on November 18, I will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the final vows I took in the lay Community of the Beatitudes (in 1978) in the presence of Mgr Coffy, then archbishop of Albi (late Cardinal of Marseille). I will go to Lourdes to thank Our Lady, because it is in the Grotto of Massabielle that she confirmed the calling I had received in my heart. I also thank all who prayed and are praying for me (see PS6); I am well aware that it is thanks to their loving support that I was able to persevere all through the years!

What to say about the Spouse - Jesus - that I wed 30 years ago? He is the best of the best! I did not have the least idea of where He was going to take me, or on what paths he was going to lead me, but I knew Who I was following, with Whom I was going to live day by day, and that was all that mattered to me. When He called me, I felt so free to tell Him 'Yes' or 'No'! Now I cringe at the thought that I could have said 'No'!

What a joy to have had the grace to say 'Yes' to Him! Even though I have often disappointed Him, He has never disappointed me, His mercy always saved me! With Him, life is never boring, He is Life itself and He always finds the way to turn everything, even evil, into good. I marvel at the beauty and greatness of His plans, plans He had carefully hidden from me when He called me. May He be blessed, He who is the Way, the Truth and the Life!

I wish here to encourage those who are still afraid to jump into the adventure of ‘YES’, whatever call they have received: you don't know what you are missing! Rather, be afraid of missing the splendid gift Jesus is offering you. Answer Him today and keep holding on to Him as a person, no matter what happens. I promise you, you will not be sorry! We only have one life...

PS 5- According to the Catholic Church (in brief), amniocentesis is accepted if the dignity or value of both the unborn child and the parents is respected and promoted. To reassure the couple from the “risk anxiety” it would be a more serene continuation of the pregnancy and for the possibility of early therapy to ameliorate the assistance at delivery and after birth and to help the couple to a conscious and peaceful acceptance of the unborn child even if not “perfect”. However, if amniocentesis is performed in order to decide the fate of the child’s life (i.e., whether or not to kill the baby if the baby is diagnosed with a chromosomal disease) only then is it illicit. (Most Catholics do not realize that the Church is not against technology, but certainly against the application of it to decide life and death!)

The visionary Ivanka Ivankovic-Elez had her regular annual apparition on June 25th 2008. According to the visionaries, Vicka, Marija and Ivan continue to have daily apparitions, and Mirjana, Ivanka and Jakov have an annual apparition.

At Her last daily apparition on May 7, 1985, Our Lady confided to Ivanka the 10th secret and told her that she would have an apparition once a year on the anniversary of the apparitions. It was that way also this year. The apparition lasted 6 minutes. Ivanka had the apparition at home in the presence of her family, her husband and her three children.

After the apparition, the visionary Ivanka said: “ Our Lady spoke to me about the ninth secret. She gave us Her motherly blessing. ”

Medjugorje Peace Marathon

The second “Peace Marathon” will take place on the 17th of May, 2008. It is organized by the Kup-Karmel Christian Association. The Marathon begins at 9 am and goes from Grude through Ljubuški to Medjugorje (42,195 meters). Ordinary citizens are free to participate in the Ljubuški to Medjugorje stretch of the course, which begins at the same time.

On January 2nd Mirjana Soldo received her monthly apparition at the Cenacle. After the apparition, she gave us the following message:

"Dear children! With all the strength of my heart, I love you and give myself to you. As a mother fights for her children, I pray for you and fight for you. I ask you not to be afraid to open yourselves, so as to be able to love with the heart and give yourselves to others. The more you do this with the heart, the more you will receive and the better you will understand my Son and His gift to you. May everyone recognize you through the love of my Son and through mine. Thank you."Our Lady then asked us to pray and fast for our shepherds. Mirjana was peaceful during the whole apparition and made no extra remark.

2 – Vicka’s Return?Around the 1st of January, large crowds of pilgrims once again gathered on the main street in Bijakovici. Vicka, after an absence of nine months for health reasons, returned to the stairs of her blue house to give witness! This year however, we will have to wait until March for her to resume her normal rhythm of speaking three days per week. By then the treatment of her shoulder should be finished. In these last nine months, Vicka has suffered more than usual, but she knows how to remain happy in all situations, even those that are apparently negative.

Recently I had the opportunity to meet her and discuss the latest events with her, as well as her suffering. I was wondering why God would allow nine months to go by without Vicka speaking. How many thousands of people would have been able to be touched by her beautiful testimony and have returned to God? Why did God allow the long silence of this excellent witness? What advantage was there in keeping her away, trapping her inside her house, neither able to move, nor able to meet the crowds from all over the world who called for her? Of course it has to do with the incredible fruit of suffering, when it is offered to Jesus. There is no better example than Vicka. She does it with such ease. When I asked her about how she manages to stay positive she had many good points to share!She said: "You see, if God allowed that absence, He knows why, therefore I’m happy.

He knows how much I love to bear witness to the pilgrims, He knows that the pilgrims need to hear the messages; then if He still chooses for me to make a sacrifice and bear this suffering instead, I don’t doubt, this plan is the best one for us all. That’s why I’m happy. I know that everything He does is a blessing. I am in His hands in order to serve Him. He can do as He wishes and, whatever He does, it’s His choice and I always thank Him. He sees so differently from us! We judge too easily on the outside. We have our own thoughts about things and we want God to act according to our wishes. But no! You see, we should always be happy with what God does, even if we have wanted something different. This brings heart-felt peace. I’m happy to be with my family, with the pilgrims or my friends, but I’m also happy when I’m sick. The important thing is to say YES to His ways and to have total confidence in Him. When you have confidence, you have peace! But this doesn’t happen overnight. We learn it day by day and we have to work in our hearts. We have to pray! God always wants to give us that peace, but we have to pray and to open our heart in prayer."

3 - The war rages onI asked Vicka how was Baby Jesus when she saw Him in the arms of His mother on Christmas day. Was He asleep? "No!" She said. "He was completely awake. His eyes completely open!" Then I asked, "And His Mother, I suppose that she was radiant with joy?" To my question, Vicka lowered her head for a second and responded, "Yes, she was joyful; it was Christmas! But, she’s a mother, so even if her heart aches with pain, she hides it in order to show happiness to her children. But for me, since I’ve been seeing her for a while, it shows." (I asked this question because of Mirjana’s surprising reaction to the apparition of Our Lady on December 2nd.) I continued to ask Vicka, "I understand that the Mother of God suffers enormously, seeing the large number of families breaking apart today." "Sister Emmanuel," Vicka responded. "Today there are not only families that are breaking apart! It is EVERYTHING that is breaking!"

On my way home from Vicka’s house, I thought about writing an "Open Letter to the Blessed Mother" and to share here some parts of it so that we are all encouraged to pray:
Dearest Mother, You have said it yourself, while looking at our hearts; your heart is filled with pain. Know that our hearts are also aching when we think or your immense sorrow, after all that you have done for us in Medjugorje!I do not know, and no one knows, what Mirjana saw last month that caused her to cry for so long after the apparition.

But I implore you, don’t abandon us! Don’t leave us alone, battling with this world without peace and undermined from inside. Do not cease your marvelous apparitions that happen every day when the sun goes down, because so many children await and cherish your arrival!Don’t withdraw your hand too quickly from us! Look around, there are too many young people who wander, are blas_(c) and without goals! There are too many couples who split, too many children who are force fed with emptiness and are thirsty for love, too many people who are victims of solitude and fatal blows. You can’t leave us in the heart of this battle, dear Mother, even if we have responded so poorly to your call and have let all this suffering cover us, even though we had your messages to teach us how to live!Your Son spoke to us of the fig tree that the owner wanted to cut down because it didn’t bear fruit. But the gardener interceded. "I will dig around it and give it some manure.

" Dear Mother, please give us another chance, multiply your graces! We’re so hard-hearted and rebellious! You can’t let hatred lead the world and poison so many innocent children as early as primary school. Look into your maternal heart: can you really let your children rush into the road of death that is on display on every screen! How could you leave us at this very moment when in the West, the rates of perversion, depression and suicide increase everyday?You know the situation all too well! But you listen to sincere prayers and, for even one single child who cries out, you employ all the power of your intercession before the Father of Mercy. Mother dear, we beg you, do increase your interventions on our behalf and ask our Father to allow you to remain in Medjugorje for a long, but a very long time!Call among us pillars of prayer and of holiness, and chase the evildoers away!For the first time in your messages, you said that you fight for us as a mother fights for her children. You wouldn’t have to fight if there wasn’t a war raging! So, please listen to the clamor that comes from the front line and to the uproar that the enemy is making! See the anguish of those who have not yet taken up the right weapons, and please continue to visit the earth without tiring!Mother dear, come to our aid!

3. A Saint for 2008There is a nice tradition in some convents and monasteries, that of picking a Saint at the beginning of the year. In fact, St. Faustina speaks of this practice in her community in Divine Mercy in My Soul Diary (#360). We too have asked for a Saint to accompany our family of Children of Medjugorje for 2008, and we have received St. Mary of Magdala! The apostle of the Apostles! She will help us to evangelize! So let us call on her everyday of the year so she that she will obtain for us the grace to love Jesus as she did, repent from our sins and remain in the intimacy of His Mother. You can also receive a particular Saint (See PS). This Saint will be your companion for the whole year, your friend, and your confidant. He will give you protection, will help you in your daily life and will guide you to find your own personal path to sanctity. He will grant you his virtues and will talk to your heart according to the level of intimacy you wish to have with him. Read his life, even his writings maybe!

4. Don't miss out on Lourdes!I have always seen a beautiful relationship between Lourdes and Medjugorje. As she accomplishes the impossible in Medjugorje, Mary does the same in Lourdes! To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Our Lady’s Apparitions to Bernadette, the Holy Father has offered very special incentives! From February 2, 2008 (Presentation of Our Lord) to February 11, 2008 (Our Lady of Lourdes), when you pray in front of an image or a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes you receive a special indulgence. For those who are able make the trip to France, blessed are you! Many graces are in store there throughout the whole Jubilee year as there is a special plenary indulgence granted, according to the usual rules of the Church, to those who visit Lourdes (See PPS). If you do go, don’t miss the pools, Mary is waiting for you with deep graces of healing, liberation, peace and light, so you can love, forgive and go forward in sanctity. PPS - The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds the faithful that the conditions to obtain the grace of a plenary indulgence includes: the sacrament of Confession, Eucharistic Holy Communion, a prayer for the Pope and being free from any attachment to sin, (# 1471 and following).

The 10th anniversary of broadcasting of Radio MIR Medjugorje was celebrated on Saturday, December 8th, with Holy Mass in Saint James’ parish church in Medjugorje. The Eucharistic celebration was presided by Dr. Fr. Ivan Sesar, Provincial of the Herzegovinian Franciscan Province of the Assumption of Mary and former Director of the Information Centre and Radio MIR Medjugorje, in concelebration with Dr. Fr. Miljenko Steko, current Director of the Information Centre and Radio MIR Medjugorje, Fr. Mario Knezovic, former Manager of the Information Centre and Chief Editor of Radio MIR Medjugorje, the Franciscans serving in Medjugorje and priests on pilgrimage in this place.
Holy Mass was attended by the employees, collaborators and supporters of Radio MIR Medjugorje. Musical group "Mystery" from Zagreb embellished this celebration with lovely music.

From the history of Radio MIR Medjugorje

The existence of Radio MIR Medjugorje is connected with one of the largest places of pilgrimage of our times. According to the testimony of six visionaries, the Blessed Virgin Mary is appearing in Medjugorje since 1981. (We do not have the intention to precede the judgment of the Church about the supernatural character of these events. This judgment belongs to competent authorities of the Church, to whom we submit fully.)

The idea of creating an Information Centre is a fruit of the desire to give necessary information to the pilgrims coming to Medjugorje, and to those who want to know more about this place. This idea could not be put into practice in the time of the communist regime or during the war in this region, but only in 1993, when the warfare began to decrease.
The Information Centre MIR Medjugorje started officially with activities on November 25, 1993. Gradually, different services within the Centre began to develop… Two years of preparation were needed for Radio MIR Medjugorje. It began to broadcast in 1997.

The initial idea was to create a Radio station with limited broadcasting area, serving mostly the inhabitants of the parish Medjugorje and the pilgrims. The core of the programme was the broadcasting of the Evening prayer programme from Saint James’ parish church. The studio was blessed on November 7, 1997, by Mons. Lazaro Perez, a bishop from Mexico. The first day of broadcasting was November 25, 1997. After broadcasting the prayer programme from the parish church, some information and news were given. The programme from the studio ended at 8 PM.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament was broadcasted for the first time on May 25, 2000. The programme scheme was growing gradually. Beginning with three hours in the beginning (and 21 hours of transmitting the programme of the Croatian Radio and Croatian Catholic Radio), Radio MIR Medjugorje arrived to 24 hours of broadcasting from the Medjugorje studio. This happened on the Solemnity of Annunciation, on March 25, 2004.

The most important events in the history of Radio MIR Medjugorje

On September 24, 2002, at the occasion of the 37th Day of the means of social communication, the direction of the Radio was received by the Cardinal Vinko Puljic, archbishop of Sarajevo, president of the Counsel for the means of social communication of the Bishop’s Conference of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The direction of the Radio thanked the Cardinal for his tireless spreading of truth, of the culture of peace and of the Word of God. The cardinal said about the Radio: "I hope that you shall continue as you have begun, uniting spirit and knowledge, heart and culture, conscience and faith, and be a real means of evangelisation".

Radio MIR Medjugorje was also broadcasting the events linked with the beatification of Ivan Merz in Banja Luka: transmission of Holy Mass and the act of beatification presided by the Holy Father John Paul II, and opinions of personalities from the Church and the political life, as well as simple faithful. For this work, Radio MIR Medjugorje was congratulated by Mons. Dr. Franjo Komarica, bishop of Banja Luka.

On June 25, 2002, the 21st anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady, the Evening prayer programme was transmitted by 13 Radio stations from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and by Radio Maria from Italy.

At the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions in Medjugorje, Radio MIR Medjugorje broadcasted for the first time a whole-day programme, beginning at 8 AM and ending at midnight. The theme was Our Lady’s apparitions and the parish Medjugorje, and it included different guests: the visionaries, different personalities from the Church and social life, as well as pilgrims. Journalists were reporting from the roads, where the pilgrims were coming on foot. The evening Mass was transmitted by 17 Radio stations from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.

The most rated Radio in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina
In March 2003, the Internet service "Bljesak info" from Mostar made an opinion poll about the rating of different Radios in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It included local radio stations as well as four radios, which broadcast in the whole country. According to this opinion poll, the most rated Radio in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina is Radio MIR Medjugorje.

Broadcasting area Through different antennas, which were multiplying gradually, Radio MIR Medjugorje can today be heard in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Croatia, as well as in some parts of Slovenia, of Montenegro and of Italy.
Since the feast of St. Francis, October 4, 1999, a server is enabling the programme to be transmitted live through Internet. Radio MIR Medjugorje is the first radio in Bosnia-Herzegovina which broadcast through the Internet.

Since Christmas 2003, Radio MIR Medjugorje can also be heard in Europe, in the Middle East and in North Africa through the Satellite HOT BIRD 6.

Dear Children of Medjugorje,

Praised be Jesus and Mary!

1 - On December 2nd, one could see tears in Mirjana’s eyes. When the apparition was over, she wept for a long while before sharing with us the following message:

“Dear children! Today, while I am looking at your hearts, my heart is filled with pain and apprehension. My children, stop for a moment and look into your hearts. Is my Son, your God, truly in the first place? Are His commandments truly the measure of your life? I am
warning you again: without faith there is no God’s nearness and no God’s word which is the light of salvation and the light of common sense.”

Mirjana added, “I painfully asked Our Lady not to leave us and not to take her hands away from us. She painfully smiled at my request and left. This time Our Lady did not say, I thank you!”

2 - After the terrible pain Our Mother expressed, it is important that we console her aching heart by wholeheartedly living this special time of Advent with her. She is totally focused on the Baby to come. Her whole mind, heart and soul are already unified with this invisible little Being! She will teach us how to speak to Him with tenderness, how to unite with Him in the silence of our soul, how to hold Him in our arms and be completely absorbed in Him. She will show us how to put Him in the center of our lives, because He is our life! She will walk through our days with us and, looking at her face, we will read the desires of Baby Jesus!

I wonder at how Mary could be so peaceful in those days! She was indeed in the worst situation possible: her family, puzzled by the order from Cesar, undertook a journey of 180 Kilometers, at the worst time in her pregnancy, in the middle of winter! Once they arrived in Bethlehem, they counted on being welcomed by their tribe. Instead, they were rejected! They ended up in the most unsanitary place of all, a shelter for animals that was cold, dirty and reeking of manure. We have romanticized the picture so much with our cute little lamps and fuzzy sheep! There was neither light nor water; they did not have a bed or the slightest facility for a pregnant woman about to give birth! Joseph must have been broken at first, not able to provide a decent place for his beloved spouse and Son. Mary, on the other hand, was calm and composed, entirely focused on the Savior’s coming! And what joy she had!

I can imagine each one of us in the same situation - myself especially - absolutely distraught by all the deficiencies of the “shelter”, nervous or angry, making what was supposed to be a wonderful time of grace, a time of constant complaint and frustration!

This Advent, my proposal is that we choose to be joyful in the midst of our difficult situations, in the midst of our lacks and weaknesses, whatever they are. Even if we have enough to eat, enough money to buy nice presents, all of us lack something inside; and it aches. Let us choose to be happy anyway, with things just as they are today. It is beautiful to glorify the Heavenly Father for what we are experiencing today, even for what is difficult; because difficulties do not last into Eternity, whereas the fruit of suffering remains.

Certainly, it takes effort to extract the little, bitter, roots of anger within our hearts, which could hinder the immense joy to receive our Savior and to put Him in the first place. But we want a true Christmas this year, the best ever! Don't we? Then, let’s prepare the manger of the Child, with purity! May each piece of straw and each piece of soft material we use, be a true sacrifice, an extra sincere prayer that we offer to Mary! Thus, she herself will arrange her Son’s bedding in our hearts, and what a joy for Her to lay Him there when He is born on Christmas night! Baby Jesus will feel at home in our hearts and Our Blessed Mother will be so consoled!

3 - Mother Teresa’s calendar. Last month, the visit of Mark Miravalle to Medjugorje gave us much joy. Mark is a permanent deacon in the USA, professor of Theology at Steubenville Franciscan University, Ohio, and a great Marian apostle. During a conversation we had together, he told me an interesting account of some interaction he had with Mother Teresa. He gave me permission to publish it here, since it is connected with Medjugorje.

On August 14, 1994, Mark was in Calcutta, presenting talks on Mary as Co-redemptrix, Mediatrix, and Advocate to six different groups of Missionaries of Charity groups at Mother’s request (including two of which Mother herself attended). When Mark first entered the room and walked over to the place where they were to meet, he saw a calendar with the image of Our Lady of Medjugorje, hanging on the opposite wall. After a few minutes of enthusiastic conversation with Mother on other Marian issues, he pointed up to the calendar and asked her, “Mother, do you believe in Medjugorje?”

She responded by putting her finger up to her lips as if to gesture ‘shhh!’ and she answered, “I asked Our Lady of Medjugorje to come to my first Home for the Dying in Calcutta, and she did!” Mark did not have the courage to push the matter with the future saint by asking, ‘How did she come, Mother -- an apparition? A healing?’ Instead, he left the subject, but he noted that a peaceful smile had spread across her face. Mark never found out what the Gospa did to reveal herself in Mother Teresa’s Home for the Dying in Calcutta!

Through several other witnesses, we know that Mother Teresa took great interest in Medjugorje and believed in it. In fact, she had personal contact with Father Slavko Barbaric. She dearly wanted to make the pilgrimage to Medjugorje, but knowing the enormous impact of her slightest move and how easily the faithful would interpret her initiative as a Church fact, she did not want to be ahead of John Paul II. Out of humility, she chose to wait for him to precede her. According to the official position of the Church, she could have come, since a letter from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith stated in May 1998: “Every person may go to Medjugorje on a private pilgrimage,” (see PS1).

4 -‘The day of joy’. The Blessed Mother always wanted the youth of the prayer group (and all of us) to deeply prepare for “the day of joy”, allowing Baby Jesus to be truly born in our hearts. A few days ago, in an apparition to Ivan, the Gospa invited again the families to pray each day together in front of the crib. This invitation may inspire all of us to create a beautiful Nativity scene in our homes as soon as the beginning of Advent, and not make it in haste during the week preceding Christmas.

5 - Plenary indulgence in Lourdes for 2008! On December 5th, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he granted pilgrims a daily plenary indulgence on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the apparitions in Lourdes. The indulgence is attached to the pilgrims that will visit all the places of the "Way of the Jubilee" designed for the Jubilee Year in Lourdes. The Jubilee Year will extend from December 8, 2007 to December 8, 2008 (See PS3).

Dearest Mother, for the day of joy, we want to offer you the best response ever! At any cost, we want to dry your tears. This Christmas, may you witness in our hearts the full victory of God’s Love!

Mirjana added: I asked Our Lady painfully not to leave us and not to give up on us. Our Lady painfully smiled to my request and left. This time she did not finish her message with the words "Thank you".Our Lady blessed all of us and all religious articles we had with us.
